Batteries should never be placed in the trash, recycling, or green waste bin. When batteries are damaged, crushed, or exposed to heat, they can spark and start fires during collection, transportation, or processing.

Roseville residents have several free and convenient options to recycle batteries safely. Keep all batteries out of trash, recycling, green waste, and public litter containers.

Battery recycling update

To improve safety at City facilities, the City is removing battery collection tubes from public facilities on or before July 31, 2026. The tubes were intended for certain household batteries, but they have increasingly received lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries that were not accepted in the tubes. These batteries can create fire and safety hazards if damaged or disposed of improperly. Residents can continue to recycle batteries through the Household Hazardous Waste Doorstep Collection program, the Western Placer Waste Management Authority, and other approved recycling locations.

Why batteries can be dangerous

Many batteries contain materials that can ignite if they are punctured, crushed, damaged, or exposed to heat. Lithium-ion batteries are especially concerning because they can overheat, spark, and catch fire.

Improperly disposing of batteries is illegal and creates serious safety hazards. Batteries—especially lithium-ion batteries—can ignite or explode when crushed or damaged in collection trucks or processing equipment, putting workers, facilities, and the community at risk. Always use an approved battery recycling or disposal option.

Take accepted batteries and other household hazardous waste to the WPWMA Materials Recovery Facility and Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe, proper disposal. The facility accepts a wide range of household hazardous materials and provides a convenient year-round option for residents to recycle items that should never be placed in the trash or recycling cart.
