Be a food hero during Food Waste Prevention Week

Sep 29, 2026

We’ve all done it. Forgotten leftovers in the back of the fridge, bought more than we needed or tossed food we meant to use.

Food Waste Prevention Week, Sept. 28 through Oct. 4, is a reminder that small choices can help food go further, save money and reduce waste.

A few simple habits can help:

  • Check your fridge and pantry before shopping
  • Plan meals and buy only what you need
  • Use foods that will spoil first
  • Freeze food you won’t eat in time
And when food scraps can’t be avoided, Roseville makes disposal simple. Residents use one combined black or gray cart for trash, food waste and recyclables. Materials are sorted after collection so recyclable and organic materials can be recovered.

Keeping organic material out of the landfill also helps reduce methane emissions and supports California’s SB 1383 goals.

One important reminder: Green carts are for yard waste only.

This week, make every bite count. Learn more at roseville.ca.gov/organics.
