Next steps

The City of Roseville will be applying and competing for federal and state trail grants to fund the next steps of the project, including construction. These steps can be seen under the Timeline tab below.
The City of Roseville is studying the possibility for a paved multi-use trail through Mahany Park open space. Part of the area is a public park, while most is designated an open-space preserve. It includes sensitive habitats like wetlands, vernal pools and seasonal streams—home to many plants and animals.

Walkers and bikers traveling through the preserve are wearing away a network of dirt paths, often unknowingly damaging endangered plants and wildlife.

Because of this, we’re studying the possibility of a paved trail, which would:
  • Protect vulnerable habitats,
  • Provide safe creek crossings, and
  • Offer better connections between neighborhoods, schools, park amenities, and other destinations.
Safety, aesthetics, topography, and land use impacts are important factors also being considered.

Ultimately, a trail would connect with existing and proposed trails nearby, as shown in Roseville's Bicycle Master Plan.

Funding for the Mahany Park Open Space Trail Feasibility Study is Transportation Development Act and Local Transportation funds. The approximate cost is $315,000.

No City General Fund or Measure B monies are contributing to this project.

Trail design and construction funding will come from future Federal and State grants dedicated for trail projects. The City will be applying for and competing against other communities for these grants to pay for future phases.

* Opportunities for public input
More than 1,300 members of the public shared input through the first online survey. Here’s what people said:

  • Open space area is well used and appreciated by joggers, walkers (often with dogs), and bicyclists to stay fit and enjoy nature
  • Natural feel of the open space is of great importance and sensitive habitats should be protected
  • Trails should provide connections to existing and planned trails
  • Paved trails and bridges are needed for people who use mobility devices and strollers
  • Paved trails and bridges are needed for year-round, all weather use by people of all ages and abilities
  • Visitors should be directed to nearby public parking lots instead of neighborhoods (e.g. Mahany Park lots)
  • Where possible, paved trails should be located where they can be shaded for at least part of the day
  • Benches, pet waste stations and trail signage should be included in future, final trail design

After reviewing the responses from the first community survey along with factors such as impacts to sensitive habitats, several proposed trail alignments were available for public consideration through a second survey.
