The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings & Fire Weather Watches to alert fire departments of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wildfire activity.
The Roseville Fire Department is committed to enhancing community safety and well-being through proactive risk reduction, public education, and strong regional partnerships. One way we do this is by helping the community understand and prepare for critical fire weather conditions.
The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches to alert fire agencies and the public of weather conditions that can lead to rapid wildfire growth.
A Red Flag Warning, the highest alert, is issued when critical fire weather conditions are expected within 24 hours and may result in extreme fire behavior.
A Fire Weather Watch is issued when those conditions could develop within 12 to 72 hours. While one level below a warning, fire danger remains high, and residents are urged to use extreme caution, as even a small spark can start a major wildfire.
These alerts are typically based on a combination of factors such as low relative humidity, strong winds, dry vegetation, and the potential for dry lightning.
As part of our commitment to community education and regional collaboration, Roseville Fire participates in a countywide awareness program alongside Placer County fire agencies. On days designated as Red Flag Warning days, red flags are placed in front of each fire station to serve as a visible reminder of elevated wildfire risk.
While Red Flag Warnings do not change fire restrictions within Roseville, they may impact restrictions in surrounding areas. If you plan to travel or recreate outside the city, please check local regulations.
