Penalties for illegal fireworks in Roseville
Illegal fireworks carry many risks, including injury to yourself or others, property damage from fires or explosions, the safety of our first responders, costs of responding to emergencies, environmental harm to open space and air quality, and legal consequences for people who use them.
The Roseville City Council amended the municipal code in May 2024 to make penalties for those who use illegal fireworks much more severe.
Here's what you need to know:
- Only Safe and Sane fireworks are legal.
- Safe and Sane fireworks are registered with the California State Fire Marshal’s Office and labeled as Safe and Sane. They are sold only at local licensed firework booths throughout the community and are approved for use in the city limits of Roseville.
- If the California State Fire Marshal’s seal is not on the packaging, it’s illegal.
- Remember, any fireworks that fly in the air, dart across the ground or explode are considered illegal in California.
June 28: Noon-10 p.m.
June 29 – July 4: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.
June 29 – July 4: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Discharging Safe and Sane fireworks is legal from noon on June 28 through 11:59 p.m. on July 4.
- Report illegal fireworks concerns through the myRSVL app or Roseville.ca.us/myrsvl by submitting a service request.
- You do not need to create a myRSVL account, but you will need to provide your contact information along with video or photographic evidence.
- Do not engage or confront anyone using illegal fireworks.
- Attempt to capture a photo of the illegal fireworks from a safe distance.
- Gather pertinent information including the street address where the illegal fireworks are being discharged.
- Call 916-774-5000, extension 1 to report property damage.
- Call 911 if the use of illegal fireworks results in injury, fire, or another emergency.
- Only use Safe and Sane fireworks.
- Always read directions.
- Use fireworks outdoors only.
- Never use near dry grass or other flammable materials.
- Keep a safe distance.
- Light one at a time.
- Have a bucket of water and a hose handy.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks.
- Do not wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Never carry fireworks in your pockets.
- Completely submerge fireworks in a bucket of water and allow them to soak overnight.
- Place the soaked fireworks in a sealable bag to maintain moisture.
- Place the bag in your outside garbage can for disposal.
