Disaster can strike at any time without warning and natural disasters such as floods, fires, earthquakes, heat emergencies and windstorms affect thousands of people every year. Recognizing possible hazards that could affect your area and knowing what to do to protect yourself and your family will help you take the appropriate steps to prepare beforehand and assist you in recovery after the event. There are three steps to the preparedness process:

City Preparedness

The City has an Emergency Management Team (EMT) that meets regularly and has representatives from each City department as part of the team. The EMT works to ensure that the City is prepared to respond to disasters that may occur within the City.
The City Manager acts as the Emergency Services Director. The Director works closely with city staff during a disaster; while the day-to-day operation of disaster preparedness and readiness lies with the Emergency Preparedness Manager, a Roseville Fire Department Battalion Chief.
A disaster can take many forms. The City Office of Emergency Services responds to all kinds of disasters, including:
  • Earthquakes
  • Floods
  • Major power outages
  • Major fires
  • Radiological accidents/attacks
  • Chemical accidents/attacks
  • Biological accidents/attacks

When a disaster occurs, the Emergency Services Director meets with city staff to prioritize and develop strategies to handle the disaster incident. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated. The EOC becomes the center of communication and coordination of resources. The Emergency Preparedness Manager coordinates all of the functions within the EOC.

The next time disaster strikes, you may not have much time to act. Prepare now for a sudden emergency. Learn how to protect yourself and cope with a disaster by planning ahead. Visit ready.gov to prepare yourself. The checklists will help you get started. Discuss the ideas with your family and then prepare an emergency plan. Post the plan where everyone can see it -- on the refrigerator or bulletin board.
