History of the Roseville Fire Department
The Roseville Fire Department has a proud history rooted in service, resilience, and a deep connection to the community it serves. From its beginnings as a small volunteer organization to today’s modern all hazards agency, the department has grown alongside the City of Roseville, guided by a commitment to excellence, compassion, and community trust.
Early Beginnings
The City of Roseville was born a railroad town in the late 1800s, growing around one of the largest railroad switching yards in the United States. With the railroad came increased fire risk, creating an early need for organized fire protection.
The Roseville Fire Department was formally organized in 1907, when Fire Commissioners established a volunteer fire department. W.B. Musson was elected as the first Fire Chief, with W.T. Butler serving as Assistant Fire Chief. Together, they selected 16 volunteers to staff two hose carts, providing the community’s first structured fire response.
Roseville was incorporated on April 10, 1909, with a population of approximately 2,500 residents. These early volunteers laid the foundation for the department’s enduring culture of service and dedication.
Growth and Evolution
For much of the 20th century, Roseville experienced steady growth. Beginning in the early 1980s, the city expanded rapidly, increasing the demand for emergency services.
In response, the department evolved into a fully staffed, professional agency. Additional fire stations, modern apparatus, and advanced training ensured reliable service across the community.
In 2007, the department proudly celebrated 100 years of service, honoring generations of firefighters who have protected the community.
A Modern Fire Department
Today, the Roseville Fire Department operates as an all hazard, all risk agency, responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and natural disasters.
Every firefighter is trained as a paramedic or emergency medical technician, ensuring advanced life support care is available on every response. With strategically located fire stations and highly trained personnel, the department is equipped to meet the needs of a growing community.

As outlined in the department’s 2026 to 2030 Strategic Plan, the Roseville Fire Department is guided by a clear purpose and shared direction.
