What can cause odors to occur?
From time to time, we hear from customers asking whether something has changed at our wastewater facilities. In most cases, there is not an unusual issue. Odor is a normal part of the wastewater treatment process as we clean water every day.
While many odors stay close to the plant, some can drift into nearby areas. We have systems in place to reduce odors, but at times they can still be noticeable. A few common factors can increase the chance of odors, including:
- Weather changes: Calm air, shifts in wind direction or wind speed, and cooler morning or evening temperatures can make odors more noticeable. We regularly track and measure odors to better understand and reduce them.
- Biosolids: We work to reduce odors from organic compounds that are a natural part of the treatment process and continue investing in improvements to further limit them.
- Repair work: Maintenance or repair work on treatment equipment can sometimes result in temporary odors. We work to minimize these impacts as much as possible.
We are constantly working to reduce odor issues at our plants. The information you provide helps us in that effort.
