Medicare is a federal health insurance program regulated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
If you and/or your dependent are over age 65, retired, and eligible for premium-free Medicare Part A and premium-based Medicare Part B, CalPERS requires you to enroll in both Part A and Part B. You are then transferred into a CalPERS Medicare health benefits plan to continue CalPERS health coverage. Failure to enroll may result in loss of CalPERS medical coverage.
Retirees who are Medicare eligible and enrolled in a CalPERS medical plan will receive their city reimbursement for PERS medical. Per the Ordinance, the city does not reimburse for Medicare Part A or B. For more info on the Medicare process, visit: CalPERS Medicare Enrollment Guide (PDF)
