Waste and Recycling Worker Week: Celebrating the people behind the bin

Jun 10, 2026

Before most of Roseville starts the day, our Waste Services team is already at work. From collecting trash and recycling to helping customers, managing household hazardous waste, and maintaining the equipment that keeps it all moving, these dedicated employees provide an essential service that helps keep our community clean, safe, and sustainable.

As Waste and Recycling Workers Week (June 15-20) approaches, we're taking a moment to recognize the people behind the work and thank them for everything they do for Roseville every day.

The roles behind the service

  • Refuse truck drivers: Our drivers are the face of Waste Services for many residents. Last year alone, they collected more than 268 million pounds of trash, recycling, and green waste – equivalent to more than 1,100 blue whales. Rain or shine, they navigate neighborhoods across Roseville with skill, care, and a strong commitment to safety.
  • Household Hazardous Waste crews: From used motor oil and paint to old electronics and batteries, these crews help keep hazardous materials out of the landfill. Over the past year, they completed more than 1,700 free doorstep pickups for residents, making it easy to safely dispose of items that don't belong in the trash.
  • Organics compliance team: This team works closely with restaurants, businesses, and commercial properties to support proper organic waste recycling. Their efforts help divert food waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and turn organic materials into valuable compost and renewable resources.
  • Customer service representatives: Need help with a collection schedule? Have a question about what goes where? Our customer service team is ready to help. Often the first point of contact for residents, they provide friendly, knowledgeable support that helps keep service running smoothly.
  • Maintenance and operations staff: Behind every collection truck and piece of equipment is a team making sure it all works safely and efficiently. Their expertise keeps our fleet and facilities operating at their best so crews can continue serving the community every day.

Looking ahead

As we celebrate Waste and Recycling Workers Week, we're also preparing for the future. The waste and recycling industry continues to evolve as new technologies emerge and state regulations change. To meet those challenges, Roseville is planning a new Waste Services Operations Center that will support our growing community, improve operational efficiency, and provide the space and resources needed to continue delivering reliable service for years to come.

As the industry changes, our commitment remains the same: providing dependable waste and recycling services while advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship for the Roseville community.

"Our team takes a lot of pride in serving the community every day," said Wes Heathcock, Waste Services Utility Manager. "From collection crews to customer service and maintenance staff, everyone plays a part in keeping Roseville clean, sustainable, and running smoothly. We're grateful for all they do."

To all of our waste and recycling employees, thank you for the role you play in helping keep our community clean, safe, and sustainable. Your work makes a difference in neighborhoods across Roseville every day.
