City removes battery collection tubes, reminds residents of safe recycling options

The City of Roseville is removing battery collection tubes from public facilities as part of an effort to improve safety and reduce fire risks associated with improperly disposed batteries. 
 
While the tubes were intended for certain household batteries, they have increasingly received lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries that were not accepted. These batteries can overheat, spark, and catch fire if damaged, creating potential hazards for employees, visitors, and City facilities. 
 
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in everyday items such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, wireless earbuds, rechargeable tools, power banks, e-bikes, and scooters. Residents are reminded that batteries should never be placed in trash, recycling, or green waste carts. Improper disposal can damage equipment, start fires, and put workers at risk. 
 
Battery recycling options remain available 

The appropriate recycling option depends on the type of battery:

• Household batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt: Use the Western Placer Waste Management Authority (WPWMA) or schedule a free Household Hazardous Waste Doorstep Pickup.
• Rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries: Use WPWMA, the Doorstep Pickup program or the Battery Network Locator to find a participating retailer. Confirm what the location accepts before visiting.
• Vehicle batteries: Contact an auto parts store, battery retailer or WPWMA.
