Behind the scenes of Public Works: Protecting wildlife one project at a time
May 22, 2026
For Public Works Week, we’re highlighting the people who help protect the systems and natural resources our community depends on every day.
While many public works roles are tied to visible infrastructure, Caroline Clarkson, an Environmental Compliance Specialist with Environmental Utilities, helps protect something just as important: the environment around us.
“I try to do my part to protect the environment,” Clarkson said. “I help conserve the best woodlands, the best wetlands, and the best wildlife habitat so our community can continue to benefit from them.”
“One of my favorite moments was seeing fairy shrimp and California tiger salamanders return the year after we restored a vernal pool,” Clarkson said. “It was a powerful reminder that my work truly makes a difference.”
Clarkson also recalled helping rescue a Swainson’s hawk nestling during a construction project.
“We were able to pause construction, safely rescue the hawk, and work with an arborist to return the state-threatened species back to its nest,” Clarkson said. “The parents came back almost immediately to care for it.”
The work also comes with some unexpected moments.
“I’ve also seen big, tough construction workers scatter at the sight of a harmless snake while I stepped in to safely relocate it,” Clarkson said. “The construction guys go running!”
“My work matters because we depend on nature and natural resources for future generations,” Clarkson said.
This Public Works Week, we recognize the many professionals working behind the scenes to help keep our community safe, sustainable, and thriving.
